Inside you’ll find the camera nestled in protective foam casing. In case you’re wondering – it’s the same exterior shell as the Fenix 5. No worries, down the road I’ll swap them out. The contents are final, but the fancy graphics on the outside weren’t printed yet when I received my test unit. But in this case I’ve got a box without the final wrapper. Now normally I’d have a final box to unbox for ya. And if nothing else, don’t forget to check out the ‘Video samples’ section down below – as I’ve put together some neat stuff there. If you find this useful, you can support the site via the links down at the end.īefore we dive into the whole review though – if you want the skinny on the camera in less than 17 minutes, check out this complete video I’ve put together, talking about all the features and how everything works. Like always, I’ll ship back the loaner camera to Garmin shortly. I’ve been using the cam for about a month now – more than enough time to figure out the good and the ugly, and everything in between.

In Garmin’s case though, the VIRB 360 will ship next month in June, and with what is easily the most capable feature set of any 360° action cam on the market (aside from ~$10,000 pro rigs). You might remember it was only last month that GoPro announced their 5.2K Fusion action cam, set to start shipping in limited quantities by the end of the year.
Not to mention the usual Garmin VIRB sensor support for data overlays from sports, automotive and boating devices. This camera one-ups everyone in the specs department by mic-dropping 5.7K resolution alongside being completely waterproofed with GPS built-in. I really like the under the visor mount, its the best I've found.Today Garmin jumped into the 360° fray by introducing their own 360° action camera – the VIRB 360.

I've ordered a separate bluetooth microphone, I'll see what that does.Īnyone have other ideas? suggestions? favorite cameras to check out? I've tried layers of electrical tape, which also sort of works, but it still makes changing the batteries a real effort and doesn't completely solve it. I've tried stuffing cardboard between the case and camera, it helps, but makes it very hard to get the camera in and out to change batteries, and the cardboard falls out. The camera rattles inside the case over the stuff I ride on. Otherwise, its not sealed against dust and water and mud. The big problem is that the camera has to be used inside the Garmin waterproof case. The battery life could be better, but I just carry spare batteries and micro-SD cards and swap them at breaks. The camera uses all my GoPro accessories like mounts. The image quality is good, the G-Metrix overlays are great. If I were not riding a big KTM300 thumper on rocks and roots and logs and dirt, I'd love the Virb camera. So now I just use VirbEdit to put the overlays on the movie, and then use PowerDirector 16 to actually edit, title, zoom, etc.

I tried editing the videos with Garmin's free VirbEdit program, but I found it frustrating, limited and dog slow. I bought the Virb for two main reasons: (1) it has built in image stabilization and (2) has overlays for speed, position, grade, altitude, etc. For the past year and a half or so, I've been shooting the videos on my YouTube channel ( ) with a Garmin Virb Ultra 30.
